Medical insurance

A senior citizen has paid medical insurance of him and spouse on 31-3-18. His son reimburses him by issuing cheque of equal amount in May 18. Can Son claim deduction for this in his return ?

No, his son is not eligible for deduction as the requirement is that the insurance premium is directly paid to the insurance company.

As per section 80D, the payer is eligible claim deduction. Here, the senior citizen can claim the total amount. Reimbursement is irrelevant. His son cannot claim.

Since the amount was paid after the previous year you cannot comply with the requirements of section 80D.
