Due to steep rise in natural rubber price, the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association had in March urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to allow duty-free import of at least 2 lakh tonne of raw material and reduce import duty to 7.5% or double customs duty on imported tyre to 20% to help domestic manufacturers.
